Aubrac transhumance festival

Vacations in Aubrac

If you’re staying at our campsite near Aubrac at the end of May, don’t miss the Transhumance Festival, which takes place over several days. In the hamlet of Aubrac itself, 80 km from Les Genêts campsite, these festivities are an opportunity to learn more about the region’s emblematic breed.

Transhumance is an essential stage in thebreeding of cattle breeds, an opportunity to see oxen, calves, heifers and all the stars of the herd! And, of course, it’s also the perfect opportunity to take a walk in the company of the herds. The shortest transhumance to 1300 m altitude on the Aubrac plateau is 15 km.

An emblematic cattle breed from the plateau of the same name, the Aubrac cow is particularly pretty, with its make-up-like eyes, matt coat, black muzzle edged in white and lyre-shaped horns. Hardy, it is adapted to the harsh climate of the high plateaus, where the wind can blow hard and temperatures vary rapidly. In Laguiole, a statue of a bull has proudly represented the Aubrac breed since 1947. But cows have been present on the plateau since the 18th century!
Breeders in the area produce Charolais meat, which you’ll find in butchers’ shops. Dairy production is also highlighted, with milk from the Aubrac mountains.
